Maha Shivratri is one of the most sacred days in Hindu tradition. It is a night of devotion, prayer, and compassion. On this holy day, devotees worship Lord Shiva and seek his blessings for peace, strength, and freedom from life’s troubles. Maha Shivratri is not only about fasting and prayers, but also about doing good deeds. One of the most powerful acts on this day is Gau Seva—serving and protecting cows. 1. Maha Shivratri in Hindu Belief

Maha Shivratri^[1] means “the great night of Shiva.” According to Hindu texts and beliefs, this is the night when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance and blessed the world with balance and protection. It is also believed that Lord Shiva drinks poison to save the universe, showing his nature of sacrifice and compassion.

Devotees believe that charity done on Shivratri gives many times more blessings than on normal days. Acts done with a pure heart—like feeding the hungry, helping the weak, and protecting animals—please Lord Shiva deeply.

At Doon Animal Welfare, more than 2000 rescued cows are under care. Many of them are old, injured, sick, or recovering from accidents. The current shed has become overcrowded due to continuous rescues.

Because of limited space:

• Cows struggle to rest properly
• Cleaning and feeding become difficult
• Weak cows face higher risk of infection
• Weather changes cause stress and illness

During heavy rains, cold nights, and strong heat, cows need a safe, dry, and calm shelter. Without it, their health and recovery are affected. The existing shelter was built when there were fewer cows. Today, it cannot meet current needs.

• Floors become slippery during rain
• Poor drainage increases infection risk
• Overcrowding causes stress and injury
• Elderly cows do not get peaceful rest

5. What We Plan to Build?

Strong Covered Shed

A solid structure that protects cows from rain, cold winds, and harsh sunlight. This will reduce weather-related illness.

Dry Flooring and Drainage

Improved flooring and drainage will keep the area clean and dry, helping injured and weak cows stay safe.

Proper Ventilation and Shade

Fresh air and shaded spaces will reduce heat stress and support better breathing.

Resting Space for Injured, Sick and Old Cows

Separate, peaceful areas where weak and recovering cows can rest with comfort and dignity.

6. Where Your Donation Will Be Used?

• Construction materials like roofing and pillars
• Flooring and drainage work for hygiene
• Weather protection such as shade and barriers
• Labour and on-ground setup support

Every rupee donated goes directly into building safety and comfort for Gau Mata.
