Nirjala Ekadashi: A Day of Devotion, Fasting, and Giving

Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is one of the most powerful and important Ekadashi fasts in the Sanatan Hindu tradition. This Ekadashi is observed during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Jyeshtha month, which usually falls in May or June. In 2025, Nirjala Ekadashi will be celebrated on 6th June 2025.

The word ‘Nirjala’ means without water. Unlike other Ekadashis, this fast is done without eating food or even drinking a single drop of water. Due to its strict nature, this Ekadashi is believed to bring the highest spiritual rewards, including the benefits of observing all 24 Ekadashis of the year combined. This day is also called Bhimaseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi, as it is connected to Bhima, one of the five Pandavas, who found it difficult to fast on every Ekadashi and thus was advised by Sage Vyasa to observe Nirjala Ekadashi for full benefits.

1. Spiritual Importance of Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is not just a fast—it is a complete spiritual practice. On this day, devotees wake up early, take a holy bath, and perform prayers dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu Trinity. Devotees offer Tulsi leaves, flowers, incense, and lamps to Lord Vishnu’s idol or picture.

The fast is kept from sunrise of Ekadashi to the sunrise of the next day (Dwadashi). Devotees do not eat or drink anything during this period. This tough fast purifies the body, mind, and soul. It is believed that observing Nirjala Ekadashi removes all past sins and helps the devotee attain Vaikuntha, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu, after death.

According to religious texts, the rewards of fasting on this one day are equal to visiting all the sacred places in India. The person becomes free from negative energies, bad karma, and emotional troubles. One also gains peace, mental clarity, and spiritual strength.

2. Why is Donation Important on Nirjala Ekadashi?

Apart from fasting and prayer, donation (daan) is an essential part of Nirjala Ekadashi. This day falls during the peak summer season, and helping others with basic needs like food and shelter is seen as a highly noble act.

Scriptures say:
“Through giving, heaven is reached. Giving brings happiness in this life and in the next. Those who give are honored both on Earth and in heaven.”

When a person donates on Nirjala Ekadashi, especially with a pure heart, he or she receives blessings from both Lord Vishnu and from those who benefit from the donation. This increases one’s good karma and removes difficulties from life.

3. Things to Donate on Nirjala Ekadashi

The most meaningful donations are those that bring comfort, nourishment, and relief from hardship. Here are some important things to donate:

Food and Grains (Annadaan)

Donate rice, wheat, lentils, fruits, vegetables, and cooked meals to poor families, laborers, or those living in shelters. Feeding the hungry is equal to serving Lord Vishnu himself. Annadaan is one of the highest forms of charity, especially on a spiritually charged day like Nirjala Ekadashi.

Cow Donation

Donating cows or supporting cow shelters (gaushalas) by giving fodder, medicines, or financial aid is seen as a supreme act of virtue. Cows are holy in the Sanatan tradition, and Gau Daan is said to remove Pitra and Chandra Dosh and bring peace and prosperity.

Money and Useful Items

You can donate money to trustworthy temples, NGOs, or social groups that help the poor people. Items like clothes, bedsheets, fans, religious books, and lamps (diyas) are also considered ideal. Donating to support health, education, and shelter is always encouraged.

Other Items

You can donate gold, an umbrella, shoes, bedding, hand fans, religious items like books, scriptures, incense, diyas, and also support gaushalas, homeless shelters, hospitals, and community centers that help those in need.

  • Mantra of Donation

The essence of giving on Nirjala Ekadashi is beautifully written in a shloka:

Danen prapyate svargo danen sukhasrute,
Ihamutra cha danena pujyah bhavati manavah।

This means—By donation, one attains heaven, happiness, and respect in both this life and the next.

Conclusion

Nirjala Ekadashi is a beautiful reminder of how self-control, prayer, and kindness can purify our lives. By observing the tough fast and supporting others through donations, a devotee gets closer to Lord Vishnu’s divine grace.

Whether you donate food to the hungry, poor people, or support an animal shelter, every act of giving matters. Let this Nirjala Ekadashi in 2025 be a day not just of fasting but also of love, service, and generosity.

Remember, even the smallest donation made with a pure heart can bring lifelong peace, joy, and spiritual rewards.
